Obituary of Robert Orie Guthrie

Robert Orie Guthrie, 86, passed away Thursday evening, September 11, 2014, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Funeral services for Robert will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at the Pence~Reese Funeral Home in Newton. A visitation with the family will be held Tuesday, one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials in Robert’s name: are being designated to, Blue Ribbon Foundation @ Iowa State Fair. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery. Robert Orie Guthrie, the son of Orie Charles Guthrie and Winona Graham, was born August 11, 1928, in Newton. He attended the Newton Senior High School, and was a graduate. On March 28, 1948, Robert was united in marriage with Martha J. Robson in Newton. He and Martha had farmed their families Heritage Family Farm (a 150 year family farm). He had devoted his life to his family, and attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton and a member of Farm Bureau. He enjoyed tinkering, storytelling, the Iowa State Fair, of which he never missed, and having coffee with the boys at Hy-Vee. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his son Robert O. Guthrie Jr. on July 25, 2003; his granddaughter Cindy; his brother Glen Guthrie; and a special cousin Darlene Brosig. Those left to honor Robert’s memory include his wife Martha of Newton; his daughter Laura (Joe) Madden of Newton; his sons: Bert (Marta) Guthrie, Mick (Kim) Guthrie, Jeff (Trish) Guthrie and Thomas Guthrie, all of Newton; daughter-in-law Debra Guthrie of Marshalltown; his fourteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law John Robson; a special cousin Myrna Guthrie; and his many friends.
